Artist Statement
Art creates the person I am. Growing from and learning new ways of using art as an expression is the best, and most important part of creating. One of my most important milestones as a child was my introduction to art, as I visited museums around downtown Dallas with my family and learned more about art through elementary art classes. In high school, I developed into my own style of art as my work was showcased in various art competitions including, the Visual Art Scholastic Event held by the Texas Art Education Association, and the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers scholastic event. Participating in art shows gave me the experience to expose myself to other artists and their captivating artwork.
My work is an escape into a separate world of line and color. Creating highly representational work that captures a beautiful moment fascinates me. Over time, I became more aware of my thought process, and how I wanted my work to speak to viewers. Art gradually became a serious expressive quality that allowed me to visually tell my story. Experimenting with a range of media allows me to apply myself in different methods to express specific meanings. I enjoy working in mediums such as, watercolor, pen and ink, colored pencil, charcoal, color pastels and a variety of mixed materials for sculpture. Before I start a piece, I work with the medium to understand how I will incorporate myself into the work. Through my work, I explore my own personal philosophies through organic forms and movement.
However, my process is constantly evolving, as my most recent sculptural work is more abstract. I use non-representational elements in my later work to represent a deeper and more complex statement. I focus on breaking through obstacles in my work, as I feel that the art of creating is just as important as the final product. As I am creating, it gives a sense of awareness to the issue that I am breaking through. By the final product, I feel as though the issue that I am working through is already resolved. For my future works, I plan to stick with a concept of using non-representational elements to present the idea of overcoming obstacles. I am inspired to work hard and to achieve my goals through art and constantly view the world through this lens. Art has been and will continue to be an important factor of my life.
